The Algarve stretches along the southern coast of Portugal and is a beautiful area in which to holiday. The Algarve combines the historic and traditional Portugal with friendly up-to-date resorts to cater for the modern-day holidaymakers that visit each year. The beaches this area are some of the best in Europe, many are Blue Flag beaches ensuring they are clean, safe and ideal for playing and relaxing on. The warm climate means it is an all year round holiday destination and attracts its fair share of golfers. You would be wrong however to think that golf is the only thing on offer in the Algarve as the area has many resorts that cater for the young and old alike, with much to offer in a picturesque setting. More on fun things to do in the Algarve can be seen here. |

Fun Things To Do in the Algarve This following gives an overview of fun things to do and places to stay in the Algarve region of Portugal
General Information and Getting There The Algarve is the southern most part of Portugal and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in that country. The Algarve is a hilly region that contains a number of cities and villages, the capital city of the region is Faro, the city has a population of just over 400,000 and this increases to a million during the tourist season. Visitors are attracted to the area for many reasons, not least of these being the Mediterranean climate (where temperatures can reach a high of 31%) and beautiful beaches of the Algarve.
Portugal has been popular with the British since the 1960s when the first cheap flights and holidays became available. Getting to the Algarve is relatively easy and it is possible to get cheap flights from a number of major airports in the UK all year round. The flight takes about 3 hours to reach the Faro International Airport, which is the airport serving the Algarve region. Most package tours will also include transfer to your resort, hotel or apartments and if you are not on a package then it is very easy to hire a car or pre-book transfers, ready for when you arrive.
Things to do in the Algarve Most people go to the Algarve for warmth and sunshine but when you get tired of sunning yourself there is still plenty to do. The Algarve is an historic region and Faro in particular has much that is of historical interest to visitors. If architecture and museums are not your thing then you may want to try out some of the fantastic sporting facilities that are on offer in the Algarve. For those people looking for a great family day out there are plenty of fun things to do in the Algarve. The region has several water parks, including Aqualand, which is near the resort of Albufeira. Aqualand has some of the best adventure rides around and if you enjoy hurtling at top speed down a water slide then this might be just the thing for you.
For people who are not so keen on water parks, there is the Lagos Zoo with a flight tunnel from which you can observe the zoo's exotic birds. The Algarve is also famous for its golf courses and if golf is your passion this is the place to be.
The Algarve has plenty of cafes and restaurants that serve a variety of dishes, some of which are particularly noted for their seafood offerings. At the end of a busy day you can go out and enjoy the night life, especially in the main resort of Albufeira, or you can go back to your apartment or hotel for a rest.
Places to Stay
Most tourists stay at one of the many, lively resorts in the region, some of which started out as fishing villages. If you want something quieter then you may want to stay further inland at somewhere like Elvoi and Tavira. There are plenty of fun things to do on Algarve holidays, and great places to stay in the Algarve so there should be something that suits you and your family. |
